Pacific Diabetes Education Program (PDEP)

The Pacific Diabetes Education Program (PDEP) is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is one of a network of 6 National Diabetes Education Programs (NDEP) in the US. PDEP works with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and agencies in Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific, inclusive of Guam, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Kosrae states), the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. Information about the National Diabetes Education Program can be found at http://www.ndep.nih.gov/.

PDEP’s goal is to reduce the burden of diabetes mellitus among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders by, 1) establishing and staffing an advisory council that includes consumers of diabetes care services, health care providers, local diabetes programs and Diabetes Prevention and Control Programs (DPCP) in Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific; 2) developing awareness and education interventions designed to improve knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviors related to diabetes prevention and control and to improve clinical outcomes for people with diabetes; 3) establishing partnerships with local community-based programs, DPCP programs, and consumers of services related to diabetes prevention and care; and 4) developing and distributing diabetes education materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, for use by community programs and health care providers.
