Healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and health promotion are critical to reducing the impact of chronic disease and other conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, kidney diseases, cancer and obesity.

Lōkahi

Our ancestors thrived by maintaining a balanced physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. They ate well, engaged in daily physical work and play, practiced good hygiene, implemented sound public health practices, and employed preventive measures to avoid advanced illness or injury.

Since Western contact, disease and loss of access to ʻāina have dramatically impacted the once thriving lāhui, reshaping the very way of life for the people of Hawaiʻi. While genetics can play a role, some chronic conditions can be mitigated with simple lifestyle changes. Some preventive actions include physical activity, a nutritious diet, breastfeeding and mitigating tobacco use.

Systemic strategies include wise public health policy at all levels, affordable health care and increased access to ‘āina to grow food.

E Ola Mau ~ The Foundation

Papa Ola Lōkahi’s efforts are aligned with the recommendations outlined in the Native Hawaiian Health Care Act of 1988 and the E Ola Mau reports from 1985, 2019, and 2023. As chronic health conditions often intersect with all aspects of health, prevention and education of chronic conditions are referenced throughout various chapters and incorporated into the broader recommendations.
